In Washington, your own PIP coverage might start paying medical bills fast no matter who caused the crash. Oregon is different: fault matters a lot more, and the answer is usually not "just use your own insurance and move on." If an electric scooter rider hit you in Salem near a school bus stop, payment can come from the scooter rider's liability coverage if they have any, your own auto policy's uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage, your health insurance, and sometimes DoorDash's commercial policy if you were actively on a delivery. Do not assume being a gig driver means "workers' comp will handle it" or that scooters are automatically uninsured toys. That advice is wrong a lot.

Here's the deeper part.

First, figure out what phase of the app you were in. For gig drivers, coverage can change depending on whether the app was off, on and waiting, or you had accepted an order/were on delivery. Insurers ask this because it changes whose policy may apply.

Second, Oregon has crash-report rules people miss in the chaos. If the crash caused injury, death, vehicle damage over $2,500, or any vehicle had to be towed, you generally must file an Oregon DMV Traffic Accident and Insurance Report within 72 hours. A police officer taking a report for Salem Police does not automatically satisfy that DMV filing requirement.

Third, preserve proof fast, especially in back-to-school traffic around places like Lancaster Drive, Commercial Street, or neighborhood school zones:

• Screenshot your DoorDash app status
• Photograph the scooter, plate or serial number, bus stop area, and school-zone signs
• Get names of parents, crossing guards, or bus-stop witnesses
• Save any Salem-Keizer school bus or nearby business camera info before it disappears

Oregon gives you 2 years to file a personal injury claim, but waiting even a week can wreck a scooter case because coverage and identity questions get messy fast.
